Sad News: Bessie Lawrence Passed Away

Dear Friends

The leadership, staff, and worldwide community of the Weizmann Institute of Science deeply mourn the passing of our beloved friend, Dr. Bessie Lawrence. Bessie was an indefatigable advocate of science education. She served on the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Midwest Regional Board of Directors and National Board of Directors.

In 1969, Bessie established the Dr. Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI) at Weizmann to advance scientific knowledge among young people. The renowned program enables some 70 gifted recent high-school graduates from around the world to study at the Institute every year. Alumni of the International Summer Science Institute can be found in the most prestigious academic institutions and in prominent positions in the private sector.

Bessie’s passion for science and learning continues to help build the next generation of researchers. Her generous and inquisitive spirit will always be remembered. We extend heartfelt condolences to her family. May Bessie’s memory be for a blessing.
